The terms “AC” and “HVAC” are commonly used in the industry. While they are similar and actually overlap, HVAC is a more comprehensive concept. It stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, while AC just involves the air conditioning on its own. Here in Pennsylvania, we do have to cover it all since our days range from being hot and humid in the summer to below freezing in the winter.

Types of Systems

There are many different possibilities in terms of how a system can be designed. You’ll commonly find a system in which the heating and cooling components are discrete from each other. In the Reading area, the team atComfort Pro, Inc. often installs a basement heating system and an external air conditioner unit for our customers. If you already have a whole-home heating system and want to put in AC, we can come up with ideas for you to consider.

Alternatives to that traditional layout include hybrid and duct-free systems. Hybrids allow homeowners to switch between gas and electric power. Duct-free systems, also called mini-split systems, use independent units for each room rather than one large unit controlling the whole house. We’d recommend going with a duct-free system if you’re putting in an addition or converting a garage to a living space. This type of system also works well in older homes that do not have ductwork installed.
